Tram’s Key Lime Pie
We weathered the storm, put everything that blew down, back up, and had a wonderful pot-luck 4th of July BBQ/Pool Party.
I’ll be posting photos along with not only my recipes but the delicious recipes from the guests as well.
What better place to start than with dessert? All of the desserts were brought by guests, which makes them all my favorite!
We’ll begin with Tram’s Key Lime Pie. Tram and Steve brought Zak & Zoey, and they were the hit of the party, of course. No one could resist either one of the adorable nearly 4-month-old sweetie-pies.
Unfortunately, Heidi Klum ruined the party for Zoey. How on earth could a supermodel ruin a party for a baby, you ask! Tram, thoughtfully, dressed the twins in outfits that I had given them. The outfit I gave Zoey was from the “Truly Scrumptious Clothing by Heidi Klum” baby clothing line.
Zoey looked adorable, but the outfit was either pinching or scratching or somehow irritating her. The otherwise sweet-natured Zoey was very unhappy. She screamed bloody murder until the outfit was finally removed but by then she was so wiped out that the only photo I got of her was of her sound asleep on my bed. Poor little Zoey!
Zak, on the other hand, was the life of the party!
Every woman in attendance had their hands on him at one time or another, as seen here with Sloane, proudly showing him off, while Papa Steve is showing off his burger and brats.
Tram and Steve hamming for the camera as they dish up their dessert plates.

sweet baby Sunday
Some of my favorite people in the world came by for a visit today!
I love this Father’s Day photo of Stephen, Tram, Zak, and Zoey!
Tram and her parents, Papa and Mama Mai, were out running errands and stopped by with the adorable Zoey…

Sending out big birthday wishes to my cohort in crime – Sheila!
We shop for vintage and salvage together.
We go on road trips to find the best stuff.
We break into houses when necessary … don’t worry, it was Sheila’s own Coronado Island cottage!

Grad Salad
Peggy’s ex-husband, Kevin along with his girlfriend, Sushil, hosted a graduation party on Sunday for the kids and for Sushil’s son, Neeraj, who is also a proud high school graduate.
The food was mostly Mexican with a little Indian and vegetarian thrown in. There were chips and Kevin’s famous (and fabulous) salsa, guacamole, queso dip, and samosas for appetizers. Freshly made margaritas, beer, wine, and Samme’s Bloody Mary bar for drinks. And the main meal – I know, that already sounded like enough, but there was much more – including Peggy’s beans and rice, Kevin’s beef brisket tacos, Sushil’s butternut squash tacos, vegetarian and chicken enchiladas, and finally – this salad that Sushil made.
I requested the recipe from Sushil and she told me she found it on foodnetwork.com but made it her own by adding a bunch of cilantro. Good call – it’s another great refreshing summer salad to add to your repertoire.

a recipe request – from Tokyo
My dear friend and former neighbor, Lori, sent me a recipe request all the way from Tokyo, Japan. Here is a condensed version of her email.
“Last night we took friends to our favorite restaurant here – Ivy Place. They have a drink that blows me away-it is lemongrass lemonade. Everyone was wondering, “How do you think they make this?!?” I said the only person in the world besides this restaurant who could possibly figure it out is Miss Linda! Ever heard of lemongrass lemonade? Here is a picture of what they serve.
It seriously is the most delicious, refreshing drink I have ever had (and I am a lemonade freak-so all the better). In all your spare time, 🙂 can you help us with this mystery and how to make this concoction? You may get a better idea though if you could just jump on a plane and get over here already!”
Now I’m pretty good at deciphering recipes and recreating them at home … once I’ve TASTED them! But to try to recreate something I’ve never tried – that’s a serious challenge! Quite honestly, it’s impossible. I can only make a guess, and not even an educated guess, as to what the bartender or mixologist at Ivy Place in Tokyo uses to make their Lemongrass Lemonade.
Otherwise, it wasn’t difficult to come up with a recipe. I have lemongrass growing in my exceedingly overgrown herb garden. I am going to clean all that excessive oregano and rosemary out of there and start over, soon, very soon … maybe this weekend!
At the end of the post, you’ll find directions on trimming garden lemongrass. If you don’t have lemongrass growing in your yard and you aren’t close enough to come over and get some of mine, you can often find it with the herbs in the grocery store.
One thing I did figure out after I made several attempts, Ivy Place makes the drink differently than I do! I can see that from the fact that their drink is clear and garnished with mint and mine is yellow and garnished with lemongrass. The yellow in my drink comes from the use of lemon zest. I don’t want to leave that out because the oils in the peel give you the most intense lemon flavor. I like my lemonade to be really lemony!
All that being said – Lori, here is my version of Lemongrass Lemonade. I’ve named it after you. Please make a batch, taste it and then give me some feedback about what you think and what might be added or taken away to make it most like the concoction that Ivy Place serves.
One last thought – Lori claims that this makes a seriously tasty cocktail when you add vodka. Strangely enough – I believe her!

Mama Mai
Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon and lunch with Tram, Zak and Zoey. Tram’s beautiful mom is in town and she made Tram and me lunch. How loving and generous is that?!?
Isn’t this photo so sweet and doesn’t Tram look absolutely gorgeous? Mama Mai took the picture of her three loves. What beauties they are!
Mama Mai made one of her classic Vietnamese dishes for us, bún thit bo (beef noodles), and the recipe she shared with me (and now I’m sharing with you) includes recipes for three fabulous components that are a treat to have on hand at all times. You’re really getting four recipes for the price of one with this post!
- Tram’s mom’s special salt & pepper spice mixture, a Mai family favorite.
- A fish sauce vinegar that is an excellent dipping sauce for any and everything, from pot-stickers to egg rolls, lettuce wraps to spring rolls… you name it! The sauce recipe can be increased to any amount you would like and kept in the fridge, so you’ll always have it on hand.
- And pickled daikon radishes that are addictive. I could sit down and eat a bowl full as an afternoon snack.

Patatas Bravas with Pimentón Sauce
By far, our favorite tapas while visiting Barcelona were jamón ibérico and patatas bravas. If you’re interested, you can read more about jamón ibérico HERE.
And if you happen to have $630 to spare, you can purchase a whole bone-in jamón ibérico de bellota (the highest quality of jamón ibérico) HERE. If you go to that extravagance, I hope and pray that you’ll invite me over!
When we had our Spanish party over a week ago, we did not have jamón ibérico. I could not find it, so we had to settle with prosciutto. Prosciutto is delicious in its own right, but a sorry substitute for the fabulously famous Spanish ham.
Luckily, we did not have to settle when it came to the patatas bravas (brave potatoes) – they were just as good as those we enjoyed in Spain. What makes them so tasty and crispy is the double-frying of the potatoes along with the spiciness of the pimentón sauce.
You’ll use two varieties of pimentón; smoked sweet and smoked hot. Both are easy to find and well priced at Home Goods or Amazon.

sweet find at Sweet Salvage
In my final post of 2012, I shared a New Year’s Eve tablescape and showed you some plates that I longed for.
Among them was this set of four Ralph Lauren clock face plates that were from a 2010 Lauren line.
I’ve now learned that the pattern of the plates is Pocketwatch.
On Wednesday of this week, I thought I spotted the plates in a photo I saw on the Sweet Salvage Facebook page for their upcoming sale.
Posted only a few images later there was a close-up shot. It’s them!
Yesterday as the sale began and as soon as Peggy, Sheila, and I got through the doors, we all headed for the booth with the orange scarf on the mannequin. Peggy got there first and was snagging up the plates for me! Thanks, girlfriend!
I was a little worried about what the price would be. I’d searched online the day before we arrived to shop – just so I’d have an idea of what price to expect. I learned that the original retail price in 2010 was $27 each!

Chorizo-Filled Dates Wrapped in Bacon
This easy and super pop-pop-popular tapa has only three ingredients and takes only a couple of minutes to throw together.
Sometimes the Spanish chorizo can be difficult to find. I found it at Cost Plus World Market.
Chorizo-Filled Dates Wrapped in Bacon
Spanish chorizo sausage, casing removed
14 Medjool dates, pitted
7 slices thick-cut bacon, halved crosswise
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.
Make an incision on one side of each date and remove the pit. Discard the pits and set aside the pitted dates.
Cut the chorizo sausage into 14 little sticks about twice the size of the pits you removed.
Tuck a chorizo stick into each date and pinch the dates closed. Wrap a half strip of bacon around each date and secure with a toothpick.

paella
On Saturday night we had our Spain Reunion Dinner.
Peggy & Jim and Lorraine & John plus Dave & I spent a relaxing evening drinking sangria, nibbling on tapas, and dining on my paella.
I’ll share recipes with you all week. I shall begin with the star of the evening – the paella!
Begin this recipe the day before to marinate the chicken overnight. Up to 4 hours before serving, brown the chicken and cook the onion, garlic, and tomato base in the same pan. You can finish the dish when your guests arrive by bringing the base back up to heat and taking turns stirring as you enjoy your tapas and sip sangria.
A couple of disclaimers before I get to the recipe. I forgot to add the peas. I had a bag of fresh peas in the fridge and just forgot, much to the dismay of my husband, who loves peas. Sorry!
And the final photo was taken at the dinner table which was outside, in the dark, and I should have used a flash. Oh well, it will have to do.
