Watermelon Crawl

Kim sent me a video on Instagram from The Food Network. The video showed how to make a Watermelon Tiki Drink. Since Marissa was in town over the weekend for her best friend’s wedding shower, I thought it would be the perfect time to give the cocktail a try.

Watermelon Cooler

I’m calling it The Watermelon Crawl Cooler and I call it absolutely adorable and perfect for a summer pool party! I’ve even made a little movie for you. It’s at the end of the post. Oh, and be sure to turn on your volume – the song is awesome!

hand blender

You’ll need an immersion blender. The one in the video from Kim was fancier than mine. The edge was wavy and sharp and it cut into the watermelon.

press to score

Mine doesn’t have that ability, so I just pressed the hand blender hard onto the center of the watermelon to score it.

cut out

Next, I used a paring knife to cut around the score…

remove top

… and cut out the top of the watermelon.

cut to level

Oh, and before you do any of that, check to see if your watermelon will stand or roll. If it rolls, slice a little off the bottom so that it will stand and be steady.

Watermelon Cooler

Watermelon Crawl Cooler

  • 1 small personal-size seedless watermelon
  • 3 1/2 cups lemonade, chilled
  • 1 cup vodka or rum, chilled
  • Fresh mint sprigs for garnish
  • Umbrella picks and other tropical drink decor
  • Colorful straws

Slice a small piece of the peel off the bottom of the watermelon, if needed, to level.

puree

Use an immersion blender to cut through the top of the watermelon and lift off the piece you cut through. Or use the blender to score the melon and then cut out the circle and lift it off.

pour out

Stick the immersion blender into the melon and blend the watermelon flesh, taking care not to cut through the bottom or sides.

lemonade

Pour the puree into a measuring cup and then place a strainer over the melon and strain 1  1/2 cups of the puree back into the melon. Add the lemonade and vodka or rum to the melon and stir.

toothpicks

Either cover the top with plastic wrap or replace the circle you cut out, using toothpicks to prevent the top from falling into the melon. Chill until ready to serve.

pool party

Garnish with mint sprigs and decorate the outside of the melon with an umbrella and other tropical picks. Insert straws and enjoy!

Hi Kim, Marissa and I bought the watermelons (I made a virgin version for Marissa’s friend, Paige, who is pregnant ….she’s the blond in the group photo) at the Uptown Farmer’s Market on Saturday. They were perfect! I saw very similar looking ones at Trader Joe’s later that same day. Thanks for challenging me! xoxo
