Easy Christmas Treats: Part 1

sprinkled-truffles

I was going to start this post with “Only ____ days till Christmas!” but I’m in denial and I’m afraid that if I say the number out loud, type the number or even think of the number – I might have a full-on panic attack, so how about I just get to my post about easy Christmas treats.

mai-family

Oh, before I do that, I’d like to apologize for an error in my last post. I said that the segment featuring Steve’s Christmas Casserole would air on 12News yesterday (Dec 12) and it did not. I set up my TiVo and was disappointed to not see it. I asked Tram and she let me know that it is airing NEXT Monday, December 19th at the 6:00 a.m. hour. If you set your DVR or got up early yesterday, I’m sorry.

OK, back on track… I made these treats at a party last week. I’ll tell you all about the party in tomorrow’s post in which I’ll share “Easy Christmas Treats” Part 2. This is Part 1 and it is super easy and pretty darn yummy too.

chocolate-covered

Peppermint Oreo Truffles

  • 16 ounces (1 ½ packages *see note below) peppermint Oreo cookies
  • 8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature
  • 18 to 24 ounces white chocolate candy melts, melted
  • 18 to 24 ounces chocolate candy melts, melted
  • Crushed candy canes, jimmies, and/or sprinkles

Using a food processor chop the Oreos (center filling and all) to a fine crumb consistency.

Place the cream cheese in a KitchenAid and blend, then add the Oreo crumbs, and mix until well combined.

Use a small cookie scoop, a melon baller, or your hands to roll into walnut size balls. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment or waxed paper and freeze for 30 to 40 minutes until firm.

dippin

Stick a long fondue fork in an Oreo ball and dip into the melted chocolate, while still on the fork and still wet, sprinkle or drizzle as desired.

on-paper

Transfer to clean parchment or waxed paper-lined baking sheets and allow to harden, for at least 20 minutes.

more-packaging

Package for gift-giving or just serve and enjoy.

Makes about 40

Optional: Soak Maraschino cherries in alcohol (brandy, port, tequila, whatever you like) for 2 hours. Drain well on paper towels and then cover the tipsy cherries with Oreo mixture. Dip and decorate as directed.

mint-oreos

Note: These can be made with regular Oreos too. Regular Oreos come in a 16-ounce package. Peppermint Oreos, which can only be found during the holidays, come in 10.7-ounce packages, so you’ll need 1 ½ packages to make 16 ounces.

where did you find the chocolate melt in the containers ready to melt

Betsy, if you mean the little tub in the first photo under the ingredient list, I found that at Hobby Lobby. It was on sale the week I bought it, so it was cheaper than the bags of melts, which they also have at Hobby Lobby.
