salty sow

For years there was a terrible Chinese all-you-can-eat restaurant not far from our home on Cactus Road. I scoffed at it each time I drove by, wondering how such an awful place could stay in business for such a long time.

Then one day, last month, I drove by, and if by glorious magic, it was gone! In its place stood a new intriguing-looking eatery called Salty Sow, with the subtitle Swine+Wine+Beer.

Sounds like a kingdom of bacon, count me in!

Before I got around to making a reservation, our neighborhood Birthday Girls Group scheduled lunch there for Amy’s birthday. Yay!

IMG_6479

Yay, because birthday lunches are fun…

IMG_6478

…and yay, excited to go to a new place…

IMG_6476

… with good friends!

I didn’t take photos of all the food, that would be tacky… just of mine, Amy’s, and Robyne’s, who were sitting next to and across from me. Very discrete!

The Birthday Girl had the Pig Panini, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Robyne had Open-Faced BLT with Egg.

I had the Brussels Sprout Caesar Salad – delicious!

Connor and I ordered take-out from the Salty Sow on Saturday night.

When we drove up we were greeted by protesters! Vegetarian protesters, who I suppose don’t appreciate the name or something. I don’t have a problem with vegetarians, sometimes I wish I had the willpower to become one myself. But I don’t get the protesting in front of the restaurant that serves meat. I don’t believe there are enough vegetarians in the entire city to protest every such establishment. Oh well, each to his/her own.

The funny thing was that as Connor was returning to the car with our bag of food, they yelled out “Meat is Murder!” and Connor responded with, “Tasty Tasty Murder.”

Oh, how I love that kid! Here he is getting in the car with our big old bag of Meat Murder.

Oh, and was it ever tasty!

We used to call that place the Chinese Slop House. The Salty Sow is 1000 times plus better! And it was a fun day–Go Connor!

Open face BLT sounds awesome right now.

Hey we were there Sat night as well! It was my second visit but first for dinner and the first for Andrew. It is my new fave hangout! The triple fried duck fat fries with a 110 min egg (that’s what the menu said) and a cold bernaise on the side are scrumptious :). P.S. PETA didn’t put many people off their meat, because the place was packed!

Hi Ruth, Darn, I would have gotten dressed up and come in if I knew such fun people were in there! How did the fruit turn out for Easter? Betsy, when we finally meet up, we should meet at the Meat Murder place! 🙂

“Sounds like a kingdom of bacon, count me in!” And alcohol – don’t forget that!

Thanks for your blog and recommending this place. We tried it for the first time on Sunday and it is a really cool place. Loved their crispy chicken and slow-cooked beef shoulder. And their crispy brussel sprout leaves are very unique and good 🙂
